The Piece of String

The writer commenced his story by giving a full and accurate description of every thing,.

For example : he described the figures of the peasants and their wives and what they were wearing, he even described their gait and the reasons that lie behind this gait .

" the men walked easily, lurching the whole body forward at every step .

Their long legs were twisted and deformed by painful labors of the country, by bending over to plough, which is what also makes their left shoulder too high and their figure crooked . "

" these women walked with steps far shorter and quicker than the men; their figures withered and upright, were adorned with scanty little shawls pinned over their flat bosoms . "

He also depicted picture that you can hear its voice and smell its smell .

" voices clamorous, sharp, shrill, made a continuous and savage din . Above it a huge burst of laughter from the study lungs of a merry yokel would sometimes sound, and sometimes a long bellow from a cow tied fast to the wall of a house . "

" it all smelled of the stable, of milk, ,of hay, and of perspiration . "

He also described the natural communications between the peasants in the market .

" the peasants examined the cows, went off, comeback, always in great perplexity and fear of being cheated, spying at the eye of the seller, trying ceaselessly to discover the tricks of the man and the defect in the beast . "

and he not only described the human figures and feelings but also he described the animals ones .

" the women having placed their great baskets at their feet, had pulled out the poultry, which lay upon the ground. Tied by the legs . with eyes scared , with combs scarlet .

They listened to propositions, marinating their prices with a dry manner with an impassive face . "

Some critics criticized him for giving more details than ought to be, but Dr. Johnson, the father of English criticism, said that " his details are necessary to achieve the subjective view depends on his eye and ear . "

The writer used language that gives the reality as a screen to display of countryside life .

The writer succeeded in fetching our attention and taking us from here to there , and prepared us for the excitement in his story , and stimulated the curiosity and expectation in ourselves .

The writer criticized the discrimination policy between people " apartheid ", and condemned the caste where the peasants toil as slaves and aristocrats exploit them and live happily at the expense of them .

Finally, the writer warned against being trustless in yourself and indicated that " the exaggeration of Maitre Hauchecorne to give more proves to confirm his innocence has given contrary result which led to his own end " .

The Setting :

The setting in the "The Piece Of String" is a small town with a country flavor.

It has long roads and a public square.

The story mostly took place outside in a town called, Goderville.

The characters in this story went many places in Goderville, They went to the Mayor's Office and to the public square, and many other places like the

Maitre Jourdain's tavern.

Characters :

Maitre Hauchecorne .
Maitre Malandain .
Matrie Houlbreque ( the person who lost the pocket-book ).
The Mayor .
Town crier .
The corporal of gendarmes .
Marius Paumelle (the person who returns the pocket-book) .

The analysis of the plot :

- The first scenes that present the main character beside the other characters and the description of the place represents " The Exposition " .

- The scenes that present the town crier's announcement for the pocket-book and take Maitre Hauchecorne to the Mayor's office represent

" The rising action " " The conflict " " The complication " .

- The confrontation between Maitre Hauchecorne and Maitre Malandain presents " The conflict "

- The scene that present Maitre Hauchecorne's release presents

" The falling action " The scene that presents the pocket-book's return to Matrie Houlbreque presents " The denouement " " The resolution " .

The plot :

When Maitre Hauchecorne was walking towards the market, he perceived on the ground a little piece of string, and since he is economical man and believes that " every thing is worth picking up which could be of any use " he stopped down and took the piece of string .

And when he was preparing to roll it up, he saw his enemy Maitre Malandain, the harness-maker, looking at him .

They had once a quarrel about a halter, and they had remained angry, bearing malice on both sides.

Maitre Hauchecorne quickly hid his find; and pretended to be still looking for something on the ground which he didn’t discover .

Next, when Maitre Hauchecorne was sitting in the town tavern, Drum beating heard and town crier talked, there was an announcement made for a pocket-book of black leather, containing five hundred francs and business papers which has been lost this morning .

Suddenly corporal of gendarmes appeared and took Maitre Hauchecorne to the Mayor's office who accused him of stealing the pocket-book, and told him that " Maitre Malandain has seen him " but Maitre Hauchecorne protested and denied

He was confronted with Maitre Malandain who repeated and sustained his testimony .

Finally, the Mayor sent him away, warning him that he would inform the public prosecutor, and ask for orders .

Maitre Hauchecorne began to tell the story of the string, but no one believed him, and when the night came he traveled to the outskirts of town to retrace his steps in search of the pocket-book .

the next day, Marius Paumelle, a farm hand of Maitre Breton, returned the pocket-book to Maitre Houlbreque .

When Maitre Hauchecorne informed the news, he began to told his story on the roads to the people who passed; at the cabaret to the people who drunk, he told his story to every one, but unfortunately no one believed him, because they believe that " there is one who find it and there is another who returns it , and this is tricks from him " .

Maitre Hauchecorne remained tell his story to every one to prove his innocence until he died while he was repeating " A little bit of string " .

The plot of "The Piece of String" have very unfortunate ending .

Whereas Hauchecorne's innocence is never returned even though he earned it.
